GENERAL PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING SERVICES

General psychological testing evaluates present emotional status relative to internalizing and externalizing symptoms.  Recommendations generated through this form of testing will help with medications as well as general treatment planning.

PLAY THERAPY

Play is a child’s natural method of learning and expressing themselves. Play therapy uses carefully selected toys, games and art materials. Through the course of play the therapist helps the child prevent and/or resolve problems, repair emotional wounds, develop self confidence and get along better with others.

                                          HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY SERVICES

Health psychology is a new and expanding field which attempts to bridge the gap between health and illness with current psychological knowledge, education and treatment intervention.  A national sample of rehabilitation patients indicated the presence of significant levels of depression while receiving rehabilitation services which impaired recovery (Bruns, Disorbio & Disorbio, 1996).  A 20 year long study at Kaiser-Permanente found that 60% of all visits by medical patients at their facilities were made by individuals with no clear diagnosable disorder suggesting a psychological bases for their medical complains (Cummings & VandenBos, 1981).  Lastly, in a study of 26,000 subjects and 14 countries it was found that physical disability was more closely associated with psychological factors than it was with medical diagnoses (Oremel, et al., 1994).  Delta Psychological & Neurobehavioral Services provides individual and family interventions which help to develop healthy habits as well as the prevention or reduction of unhealthy behaviors that contribute to illness.  Both the impact of behavior on health as well as the influence of health and disease states on psychological factors are addressed during the course of treatment.

Within the field of health psychology an important area is cardiac health.  Dr. James A. Blumenthal and other researchers at Duke University Medical Center studied 107 patients with coronary vessel disease and ischemia.  It was found that patients who learned stress management had a lower risk of a future heart attack or of needing cardiac surgery than those who underwent exercise training or those who receive standard cardiac rehabilitation care (Archives of Internal Medicine, 1997).  Delta Psychological & Neurobehavioral Services provides services to deal with stress management, comorbidity of psychological disorders such as depression following surgery as well as the use of our medication clinic to remediate psychological symptoms and to promote healthy lifestyles.
